The Diving
John Pennekamp and the Key Largo National Marine Sanctuary: healthy patch reefs, dramatic spur-and-groove formations, nurse sharks, southern stingrays, turtles, goliath grouper and schooling jacks. Reef depths average 30–60 feet with mild to moderate current, which makes it the easiest place on our calendar to actually learn something.
It is also the only trip with two full conservation days built in. One is a coral out-planting dive with I.CARE and REEF.org, preceded by a private coral seminar. The other is a guided Dive Against Debris cleanup. Dive operations are run by the Amoray Dive Center crew.

How the week runs
Day 1 · Tue
Arrival & Pennekamp
Check in and drop gear. Optional afternoon at the John Pennekamp Visitor Center and Aquarium — kayaks and paddleboards available. Welcome drink and programme orientation at 5:30. No diving.
Day 2 · Wed
GoPro PADI specialty & reef
Morning classroom: camera setup, core principles, underwater capture and the storytelling arc for the week. Afternoon two-tank dive on shallow reefs such as French Reef or the Elbow. Optional editing help session at 5:30. Dives: 2.
Day 3 · Thu
Wrecks & editing course
Morning two-tank dive on the deep wrecks — Spiegel Grove, Benwood or Duane, Nitrox on request. Afternoon GoPro QUIK Editing classroom: storytelling, mobile editing, exporting and sharing. Dives: 2.
Day 5 · Sat
Cleanup dive & banquet
Morning Dive Against Debris — a guided cleanup contributing to local reef health, with marine debris collected and logged. Final edits submitted in the afternoon. Farewell banquet at 6:30 with awards for Best Shot, Best Edit and Best AWARE Story. Dives: 2.

Yes, Open Water minimum. Key Largo diving suits all certified divers — currents are typically mild to moderate, reef depths average 30–60 feet, and visibility is generally excellent. Nitrox is optional.

It is one of the wrecks on the Thursday schedule, along with the Benwood and the Duane. Which one you dive depends on conditions and the group. Nitrox is available on request that day.

If it has been more than 18 months, we strongly recommend a PADI Refresher or ReActivate before you travel. Have your gear inspected and serviced too if it has been sitting.

Fly into Miami International (about an hour away) or Fort Lauderdale (about 90 minutes). Ground transport is not included — a rental car is the most convenient, and rideshare, private shuttles and the Keys Shuttle from MIA all work. Once you have booked, carpooling can be arranged through the host.
